On January 23, 2025, Thailand made history by enacting the “Marriage Equality” law, officially known as the Civil and Commercial Code Amendment Act (No. 24) 2024. This landmark legislation allows LGBTQ+ couples, or individuals of diverse sexual orientations, to legally register their marriages, making Thailand the first Southeast Asian country to implement such a law.

January 23, 2025, is a historic day for Thailand and Southeast Asia. As a result of the new Thai law amending the longstanding Thai Civil and Commercial Code (taking effect 120 days after its royal promulgation in the final months of  2024), same-sex couples are able to register their marriage and enjoy full rights and duties as spouses without gender discrimination.
